History
The Village of Pinehurst was established in 1895 by James Walker Tufts, who purchased 5,500 acres of land for just over $1 per acre to create a health resort in the Sandhills. Tufts hired Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of Central Park in New York City and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, to design a village with winding streets and open spaces, and Pinehurst was born. The Tufts Archives, built in 1975, preserves the unique history of this village from its founding to the present and is open to scholars and the public.
